Previously known as the
"European Cup", in the 1992-1993 season the competition has been
renamed to UEFA Champions League. Before that, only the respectice
Football Champions of the European countries were allowed to
compete. Now, also the runner-ups or from some really strong
leagues, the number 3 or even 4 can compete, for example in this
year 4 British teams are playing for a shot at the title.
The
current European Champ is FC Barcelona from Spain, who defeated
Arsenal London 2-1 in the final, played in May 2006 in Paris,
France. Spain also has the most winners of the combined "European
Cup" and the Champions League with 11 titles, followed closely by
Italy and England with 10 and Germany and the Netherlands with 6
victories each.
